NWRA Alert: Protect Land and Water Conservation Funding! Friday, December 09, 2011
Congress wants to divert offshore oil and gas money away from conserving important habitat to pay for transportation projects. There is no doubt that updating our nation’s infrastructure is a critical priority, and one that requires substantial investment. However, it should NOT be at the expense of permanently protecting important land and water resources that not only provide homes for wildlife, it cleans the air we breathe and the water we drink.
Wildlife is BIG business. $122 Billion Big: Protect Funding for Refuges for FY12 Thursday, November 17, 2011
Americans spend $122 billion annually on wildlife-related recreation, including hunting, fishing and wildlife tourism – much of that on our refuges. Investing in wildlife conservation is good for our economy and our wildlife.
Refuges alone provide over $32 BILLION annually in ecosystem services - clean air, clean water, buffer from storms, game for food – yet some in Congress want to drastically slash their funding with dire consequences.
Congress should fund the Refuge System at the highest level possible and help them help our local economies!
Urge Congress to Permanently Protect the Arctic NWR! Friday, July 22, 2011
The Arctic Refuge coastal plain represents the last 5% of Alaska’s north coast that remains legally closed to oil and gas exploration and development. The other 95% of Alaska’s coastal plain is already open to potential oil and gas development. Interestingly enough, this same 5% is also considered the biological heart of the 19-million-acre refuge. Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would introduce a spider web of roads and pipelines across hundreds of thousands of acres on the coastal plain.
Please use the Refuge Action Network (RAN) to contact your two U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative and urge them to permanently protect the Arctic NWR by passing the Arctic Refuge Wilderness Act (H.R. 139 & S. 33).
